Let’s face it. Airlines are becoming more restrictive with their baggage allowances, foisting hefty penalties on overweight and additional suitcases. Some carriers are allowing only one personal bag aboard the plane, while others are shrinking the dimensions of carryon bags to the size of a postage stamp. Even the most seasoned traveler is being challenged to figure out ways to pack the basics without tipping the scales into the red.
For those of us who simply can’t imagine a skincare routine without a morning and evening serum, two anti-aging creams, a night cream, eye cream and more, travel presents even more concerns.
With strict baggage guidelines, how do we decide which products can be left at home and which are essential to take with us on our journey - especially when we want to get our glow on and look our best during our vacation?
Skincare Travel Advice From SkinSpirit Pros
The experts at SkinSpirit hear you and have great advice up their sleeves for products that will keep your skin gorgeous and protected no matter what.
Stick to the Basics
Lynzy Davies, Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner at our med spas in Burlingame and Palo Alto, is all too familiar with the difficulties of paring down a comprehensive skincare routine to meet airline regulations.
She tells us, “I have A LOT of skincare products that I like to incorporate into my daily and nightly skincare routine. However, I know being on vacation sometimes we tend to do the bare minimum due to packing options and our precious time. My biggest recommendation to bring with you is your cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. These are key products that your skin will always benefit from!”
Lynzy also recommends investing in products that will give you the most bang for your buck. “We have 0.5 sizes that won’t clutter up your carry-on or trigger TSA,” she says.
Shop online or at any of our clinics to find your favorites cleanser, moisturizers, and sunscreens in the best sizes for easy traveling.
Stay Hydrated With A Mask
Extra time in airplanes and on the road can wreak havoc on your skin, so Michelle Jones, BS, RN, CANS, like to use a hydrating mask before and after travel.
“The key to traveling in my experience is extra moisturizer and hydration for your skin,” she says. “I love the SkinCeuticals Biocellulose mask as it is very cooling great for sensitive skin and also restores hydration to the skin. I would even recommend putting it on during the airplane ride if you don’t care.”
Michelle also recommends Jan Marini’s Clean Zyme and Skyn Zyme masks, which are not only very hydrating but also exfoliating. She says, “often times our skin breaks out during travel and this product can help gently exfoliate the skin without drying.”
Use Multi-Tasking Products with Multiple Benefits
If you’re very tight on space and looking for ways to trim down your travel bag, we’ve got some great multi-tasking skincare products that can perform multiple functions in one to keep your skin healthy. Here are a few of our favorite options:
- SkinMedica Dermal Repair primarily helps to hydrate the skin while also addressing laxity and fine lines. It also contains antioxidants.
- Revision DEJ is also a great hydrator, has benefits for laxity and fine lines, and comes in a pump, which makes it very easy to use while traveling and on the go.
- Sente Bio Complete Serum has HSA (heparan sulfate analogs) that help promote skin health by improving the appearance of mature, photoaged and dehydrated skin. It also has sustained release of retinoids.
Because sunscreen is something you should wear every day, no matter what, we also love a good multi-tasking SPF with antioxidants. Sunscreens with additional benefits include:
- Colorescience Total Protection Face Shield is hydrating, contains antioxidants, and is clinically proven to reduce free radical formation.
- Revision Intellishade TruPhysical or Original is a tinted daily moisturizer with 100% mineral sunscreen and 20 age-defying ingredients. It has a makeup-like texture.
Avoid Hotel Products
When it comes to skincare, good quality ingredients are critical. Lynzy warns against using unfamiliar products in your hotel or Airbnb. She says, they can be drying to the skin and we are never full sure what ingredients they are made with.”
