Fight ‘Backne’ With a SkinSpirit Back Facial

Most of us focus our skincare routines on our faces. We cleanse, we moisturize, and we see professionals for regular facials. But the rest of your body could benefit from some of that skincare TLC—especially hard-to-reach places, like your back.

As temperatures warm up and the swimwear comes out, you may notice that you’ve developed “backne”—bumps and blemishes on the back of your neck and across your shoulders. Just like you need help from a friend when applying sunscreen on your back, you may also need an extra set of hands when getting dirt and dead skin off of your back. Luckily, the SkinSpirit pros are here to help you glow—coming and going—with a back facial.

“At SkinSpirit, we have a back facial that features a great mask specifically for back skin,”  Karen Fernandez, SkinSpirit’s Head of Aesthetics, said.

How to treat backne

Cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate: The same techniques you use to keep your face looking great can be applied to your back, but that doesn’t mean that you should use the same products in both areas.

“Skin on the body is thicker, so it may seem to be more resilient, but it has less oils than facial skin,” explained Fernandez. Since oils neutralize acids, facial skin can tolerate or even need stronger active ingredients to be effective. Your body skin, on the other hand, needs more gentle masks and peels. And, because body skin metabolizes slower than facial skin, it may take longer to see results.

Instead of repeating the treatments you apply to your face, it’s best to engage a professional’s help to treat backne.

Meet the backne facial

SkinSpirit’s back facial treatment clarifies and softens the skin of the back—providing deep cleaning and hydration that will leave you with healthier skin. In many ways, it mirrors a traditional facial. Before starting, the aesthetician analyzes your skin to determine which medical-grade products to use. Next, they deep clean the back, using steam with enzymes to open up the pores and soften the skin. After any necessary extractions, they apply a medical-grade mask or even a resurfacing chemical peel.

“Just like masks can help deep clean or rebalance the skin on our face, they can also do that on our body skin,” Fernandez said. “A body mask can help with acne, keratosis pilaris, hyperpigmentation and sun damage or chronically-dry skin. Some masks are formulated to exfoliate and brighten while others will soften and hydrate.”

Both face and body masks have higher concentrations of active ingredients than typical creams or serums designed for daily use. They are in a “base”—an important factor in picking the right one—such as clay, cream, or gel, and have active ingredients that will penetrate skin. Body masks are more gentle than facial masks, (for example, they may contain lower levels of alpha hydroxy acids), to avoid causing irritation.

If you're experiencing backne right now, Symone Jackson, Clinical Aesthetician at our med spa in Gaithersburg, recommends undergoing a back facial every 2-4 weeks, and then reducing the cadence to every 6-8 weeks once your breakouts have cleared to maintain the results. "Anyone experiencing back breakouts or clogged pores can benefit from a back facial," she adds. "Plus, it's relaxing."
